Let’s talk about that one project that keeps you up at night. That novel sitting somewhere that you touched once or twice, the dream job you always wanted, that game you wanted to develop, that―
You get the point.
THAT project. The Soul Project.
It’s the thing that keeps tickling the back of your brain at the most inopportune of times. You can’t sleep well at night because you want more, and you can’t focus during the day because you wish you were doing something about it.
The idea is a double-edged sword in a lot of ways. On the one hand, it’s acting as a subconscious compass for your life, and it’s the thing you know you should be doing. On the other hand, it makes you feel terrible when you think about how you’re not working on that project!
So, why aren’t you working on the project!?
You can answer that question better than I can, but I’m willing to bet your answer is somewhere between not having enough time in the day and fear. Well, let’s look at these answers from another perspective.
Misplacing Your Keys
You’re running late for work, and you’ve misplaced your keys (Only me?). You have two options; either you call your boss and say you can’t come into work today, or you scrounge through every inch of your place to find those damn keys! Sometimes, the keys will be in plain view, and other times they’ll be under the fridge.
Imagine if you treated time for your project like you do keys when you need to work.
You’re willing to find that time anywhere you can, even if it’s late in the day, even if it’s only 10 minutes, you’ll find them because you have to. I know I stated something similar to this in my previous post, but I believe it’s worth reiterating here.
Your 24 hours is the same as everyone else’s, and you can find it.
Fear and Confidence
The fear I struggle with all the time. I worry I’ll never be good enough and that there is someone else doing it better already.
Is there someone doing it better than me? Of course! Why? Because they’ve been doing it longer than me. They’re doing it better than us because they’ve got X amount of time under their belt; what did you expect?
You’re never going to get anywhere if you never start. Which is the reason why I’ve started this blog, and it’s the reason why you should start your project RIGHT NOW.
But you lack the confidence to do it? Well, maybe someone whose doing it better than me can give you some motivation!
In Elizabeth Gilbert’s book Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, she states:
“We all spend our twenties and thirties trying so hard to be perfect, because we’re so worried about what people will think of us. Then we get into our forties and fifties, and we finally start to be free, because we decide that we don’t give a damn what anyone thinks of us. But you won’t be completely free until you reach your sixties and seventies, when you finally realize this liberating truth—nobody was ever thinking about you, anyhow.” Check it out here
Let’s try and get into that sixties and seventies mindset, then. We CAN do this.
Go find your keys; you have a job to do.
